Life With Schnauzers

 A Day In The Life

I’m sittin here, minding my own business, blogging away and in my own little world when I hear it…what is that?

Is it thunder?  No, the sound is too close….

It’s getting closer still….seems to be coming from the back steps.

Oh no!….. it seems to be coming from the living room now, getting louder….and CLOSER!…….I brace myself for the unknown onslaught of….what?….

Then I see it….a furious big blur of activity streaking around the kitchen counter, getting louder and louder and OH MY GOD!…..IT’S COMING RIGHT AT ME!!!!

Ten feet away…..five……HELP!!!!!  It’s black and white and gray and moving at incredible speed….three…..two…no time to run…it explodes upon me and all around me and I close my eyes, afraid to see…

I feel sharp things scraping at my skin and wet things touching my hands, arms and feet….I hear panting and high pitched cries…and what is that smell?!…….

Doggy breath!

I open my eyes, awash with relief and smothered in...you guessed it......Schnauzers!

Hi, guys!  Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m excited to see you too!  Wish I had six arms and hands so I could pet you all at the same time.  Oh, you guys are so funny, settle down a little please.  No, I’m all out of treats.  Thank you for your undying devotion and yes, I love you all too!  Hey Hon, next time give me a little warning when you’re about to open the outside gate, okay?  But thank you for making my day.  There they go…..off to seek out my favorite shoes and drag them outside….oh no you don’t!…..Give me that!   Come back here!!!.......Such is a day in the life of a Schnauzer lover…... :)

 Ya Just Never Know

I was pretty much convinced that LaQuinta was in labor (it's hard to tell sometimes), but I already had her set up in the "maternity ward", as we call it, and I thought it would be an hour or two, so I came in the house to throw together some hamburgers real quick. Well, it didn't take long and back out to the kennel I went....

Oh, Lord! She had already had a puppy and it was buried in shredded newspaper, still in the birth sack, and I didn't know how long it had been there. So, I sprang into action, removed the sack, cut the cord and proceeded to start rubbing this lifeless little puppy, trying to see a sign of life. Hubby called on the walky talky about that time and I could only say one thing...."we're loosing a puppy!" and the next thing I knew, Hubby was there.

Thank God for my husband! I had already decided the poor little thing wouldn't live and was very busy blaming myself AND poor LaQuinta. He took that puppy and worked with him for probably an hour while I concentrated on delivering the next one. He just kept rubbing him and talking to him and stimulating him while all the while, I was thinking it was useless. The puppy would make small little noises, but wasn't moving much.

Then I heard a cry.....a loud cry. All I could say was, "I'll be damned!" He was clearly not out of the woods yet, but my wonderful husband never gave up. He wrapped him to keep him warm and held him, all the while keeping him stimulated. I looked over and there he sat, with a tiny puppy wrapped in a towel on his chest with a look of determination and concern on his face and once again, I was in awe. No wonder I'm in love with this man and no wonder I feel so safe when he's around.

Within an hour or so, the same puppy that I had given up on was nursing and wriggling around with the rest of them. Today, he's still doing just fine. I'm just so thankful.

It was one of those amazing experiences that just have to be shared.

 Puppies!

Just a quick hello and good night to all. I've been delivering puppies since the afternoon and I think we're finally done. Mama is exhausted, so she and her six new babies are settled in for the night. I'm about to do the same, cuz this old butt is a'draggin.
